One of the secrets of success with a nutrient dense diets is getting lots of tasty veg and greens in a smoothie. It can be challenging to chew a pound of greens and a pound of veg every day. Enter the superstar, the smoothie. Originally introduced to me as a “green smoothie” I’ve come to find that color is the key. Green is keen, but blue is beautiful and purple is powerful. Red is robust and yellow is usually mellow. The big one to note is that we’re down with brown in our house… chocolate and dates and all kinds of goodness comes in brown from sepia to burnt umber and everything in between.
Color is also the key to getting children involved in smoothie bliss. My guys love choosing produce by color in the market and at the farm. We will check out the fruits and veg that are local and in season and choose things that are in their best form. We also work with frozen produce when fresh and local isn’t available. It’s all good!
I plan to use this page to share smoothie ideas and combinations that work for us. It’s hard to mess up a smoothie, but I confess that we’ve had a few blender’s full of ick that ended up out on the compost heap rather than in our glasses. Check back for updates… I’m working on them!
